Just next to the Place of Refuge is Two Step, a favorite place for snorkelers. Colorful
tropical fish are always in abundance, while Spinner dolphins and turtles make
frequent appearances.
Ten minutes from Hale Mele Kohola is the Ho’okena Beach Park. Ho’okena is a family-friendly sandy beach located ten
minutes from our island home. Here you can swim, boogie board, body surf,
picnic, and hang loose in general.
A mere twenty-five minute drive will take
you to South Point and the Green Sand Beach (Mahana Beach). Here, at the southernmost point of the United States, the trees
have been sculpted by the wind as if they were bonsai of epic proportions! The ocean sparkles with tantalizing hues of blue.
The Green Sand Beach is one of only three green sand beaches in the world and is well worth a visit. Also known as Mahana Beach, this is a favorite spot for fishing. If you arrive early enough in the day, you can
hike down to the beach where the sand sparkles green from rich olivine deposits
in the surrounding lava. Be sure to take lots of water and sunscreen!
If you'd rather stay closer to home, there is a private beach just a few streets below Hale Mele Kohola where you can relax with a book, explore the hiking trails and tidal pools, or just enjoy a beautiful sunset.
